Bleak Picture for life of Earth:UN Report

The fourth report in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-4) assessment series launched on 25 October provides a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the state of the environment.

Put very bluntly the report states that the world’s population is now at the stage where ” the amount of resources needed to sustain it exceeds what is available”.

The the report finds that “humanity’s very survival” is threatened by climate change, the collapse of fish stocks and the extinction of species.

The “environmental footprint” for each person has grown to 22 hectares resulting largely from the fact that 2007 is the first year in human history when most of the worlds population lived in cities. The report estimates that the world’s “biological carrying capacity” is between 15-16 hectares per person.
