Taking an Environmental Stand
"Man has been endowed with reason, with the power to create, so that he can add to what he's been given. But up to now he hasn't been a creator, only a destroyer. Forests keep disappearing, rivers dry up, wild life's become extinct, the climate's ruined and the land grows poorer and uglier every day." ~Anton Chekhov, Uncle Vanya, 1897
Over the last 40 years, the scientific community has become increasingly vocal on the subject of our destructive behaviour towards the environment. In 1962, Rachael Carson's Silent Spring began sounding the alarm. In 1992, scientists (including over half of all Nobel Prize winners) issued a stern warning. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are now correct, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet. In 2006, the movie An Inconvenient Truth starkly portrays a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.
Environmentally friendly" is a modern term that applies to any product, action or lifestyle that is designed to keep from harming the environment. Whether it be through recycling, conserving energy, composting, switching from chemical to natural cleaners, using sustainable building materials, preserving wildlife and natural areas or simply purchasing less and reusing more, there are hundreds of ways to live an eco-friendly life. Even just a few small changes in your everyday life can lead to great protection for our planet.
The aim of this site is to be an information resource center to promote awareness of the need for environmental care, and to encourage and offer suggestion on how to include ' being green' in every day life.
